Summer is here and Americans across the country are grappling with two of the season’s most compelling questions: First, is your body beach ready? Second, is your credit as buff-or better-than your bod?

Just as fitness is an ongoing process, whipping your credit into shape takes time, too. If you wait until the weather warms to start working out, you may be dissatisfied with the results. Likewise, you can’t ignore your credit score until the moment you really need it.

The same principles that can help you look good can help your credit score be its best, too. Practice good diet and exercise habits and you’ll look and feel better. Practice smart money management and your efforts will show in your high credit score.

Whether you’ll be buying a car this summer or applying for an apartment with a landlord who checks credit scores, here are a few steps that can help get your credit in shape for summer expenses.

* Get a checkup. Before you start any diet or exercise plan, you should consult your doctor. Before you begin working on (or working out) your credit, you need to understand the current status of your credit report and score. Luckily, you can do a personal credit checkup yourself, by getting your credit scor…………… continues on Las Vegas Review-Journal

Tips To Help Homebuyers Look Good To A Lender For Mortgage …
News from North American Press Syndicate:

(NAPSI)—Even with interest rates low, many buyers are sitting on the fence, unsure whether now is the right time to buy a home and if they would even qualify for a loan. There’s no magic to get you the loan you want but there are a few things you can do to help get yourself on the right path. Wells Fargo, the nation’s leading home mortgage lender, offers some helpful tips to make you look your best in the eyes of a lender:

1. Check your credit—Know where your credit stands before you apply for a loan. A borrower’s credit history can affect the amount required for a down payment, the interest rate or the amount of money that can be borrowed in relation to his or her income. A credit score of 720 or above is not only going to help you look better to a lender for loan approval, it may also help you get a better interest rate. Once per year, you are able to obtain a free copy of your credit report from each of the three credit bureaus by visiting www.annualcreditreport.com. In addition to viewing your report, you may also want to consider getting your credit score. There may be a small fee to get your credit score.

2. Decrease your debt—An important factor that lenders look at when qualifying borrowers is their debt-to-income ratio. Th…………… continues on North American Press Syndicate

Seniors Need to Check Their Credit More Often
News from LoanSafe:

(Source: By Pamela Yip, The Dallas Morning News) – Seniors need to pay closer attention to their credit reports, according to the Society of Certified Senior Advisors.

An article in the latest issue of the CSA Journal said seniors need to pay as much attention to their credit scores as other age groups because they tend to have lower tolerance for risk, less future earning power, the potential to need large amounts of emergency medical care, and they have less time to recover from a financial loss.

In a pilot study, researchers at the University of Missouri–St. Louis, the University of Arizona and Fair Isaac Corp. sampled 134 individuals from U.S. households ranging in age from under 30 to over 60 years and reviewed their credit reports.

Unlike younger people who tend to pay attention to their credit rating in making the financial decisions that shape their future, only 1 in 4 seniors check their credit score, the senior advisers said.

“Our results from this study indicate that consumers in general, and senior citizens in particular, need to review their credit reports regularly,” says Thomas H. Eyssell, associate dean and professor of financ…………… continues on LoanSafe

AL residents have credit scores lower than national average
News from WSFA:

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) –

A recent report finds Alabama residents have lower credit scores than the national average.  The U.S. Credit Score Climate Report, which is conducted by the website CreditKarma.com, found the average Alabama resident has a credit score of 635.  That’s below the national average of 656.

Roger Knauff of Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Alabama doesn’t mince words when it comes to credit problems.

“I don’t think we do enough to teach our children or our employees or people who are in financial distress or on the edge how to manage money and credit,” Knauff said.

Knauff still finds people spending over their means, and using credit when they shouldn’t or turning to title and payday loans to makes ends meet.

“When you have debt that has not paid and you can’t or are not paying it, you should not borrow money. If you have no money in savings, you have no business borrowing money.”

Knauff said one place where people run into trouble is using credit for everyday purchases like food or clothing.  Knauff advises using cash whenever possible.

“Whether you’re paying for second hand items, shopping yard sales or just paying cash in stores, your total cost of ownership is a lot less when you pay cash,” he said.

Knauff advises people to handle major bills…………… continues on WSFA

Experian Debuts New Credit Score, Helps Bring ‘Underbanked’ Into …
News from Huffington Post:

The poorest consumers, currently living off the financial grid, may soon be pulled back onto it in an unexpected way.

Experian, a data collection and credit reporting bureau, launched its new credit score, Extended View, on Wednesday. It claims that it could bring as many as 64 million American consumers who don’t have credit scores into the lending fold.

Extended View takes into account a wide variety of information not included in a traditional credit score. That includes everything from payday loan repayment history to rental payment history, and even takes a deep dive into public records — taking into account, for example, missed child support payments.

The Extended View score will be based on a scale similar to VantageScore, which has a range of 401 to 900.

Credit tips for newlyweds
News from MSN Money:

This post comes from Tom Quinn at partner site Credit.com.

Congratulations! You survived the big wedding day, hopefully enjoyed a blissful honeymoon and are now getting settled into married life. Successful marriages require a lot of effort on the part of both parties, and the management of finances should be an important area of focus. As troubled financial issues are one of the leading causes of divorce, it is surprising how many newlyweds don’t engage in open discussions regarding money, assets and credit.

Most experts agree that creating a budget, agreeing on investment strategies and allocating responsibility for who pays what bills should take place early on in the relationship and be revisited on a periodic basis. This is sometimes a difficult conversation in today’s world, given that most people entering marriage have been financially independent for a number of years a…………… continues on MSN Money

How Much Will One Late Payment Hurt Your Credit Score?
News from DailyFinance:

By Gerri Detweiler

You open your credit card statement and discover you forgot to make last month’s payment. Or you get a call from a collection agency about a medical bill you didn’t realize hadn’t been paid. Or you check your credit reports and discover a late payment is marring your otherwise perfect payment history.

How bad is it? How much does a single late payment affect your credit scores?

Of course, as with so many things related to credit scores, the answer is, “It depends.” But the irony is, the better your credit, the more you may feel the sting.

[Free Resource: Check your credit score and report card for free before applying for a credit card]

Hope for the Best

If you’re lucky, the lender won’t report that you were late. “The first thing to note is that most lenders do not report missed payments until the account is 30+ days past due,” says Anthony Sprauve, director of public relations for MyFico.com.

“Suppose a given credit card payment is due on May 15 [and] the payment is made on May 25. Technically the payment is late, and fees and interest charges may apply. But in most cases, this late payment would not be reported…………… continues on DailyFinance

Biz Brain: Unemployment won’t hurt credit
News from if you pay your bills – but my … – The Star-Ledger – NJ.com:

Q. I’m currently unemployed. How does this affect my credit rating? Prior to becoming unemployed, I worked 10 years with my last employer. I have excellent credit and all my credit cards have balances of less than $ 500. I really want to purchase a new car within the next six to eight months. How does unemployment effect my ability to purchase a car?
– NP

A. The Brain is sorry to hear you’re without a job, but if you keep tabs on your spending and stay current on your financial obligations, your credit score shouldn’t suffer at all.

“The fact that a consumer is unemployed does not directly impact the credit score as your employment status is not a data element considered by a credit bureau risk score,” said Tom Quinn of Credit.com.

It may indirectly impact the credit score if a consumer’s credit behavior changes as a result of the loss of employment, he said, such as the consumer starting to miss payments or beginning to build up credit balances to make up for the loss of income.

Quinn said the impact of those kinds of negative credit behaviors on the credit bureau score will vary by consumer. That’s because after those negatives are reported, they will be mixed with whatever previous behaviors are already in the credit file.

When it comes to looking for new credit, Quinn said, your emplo…………… continues on if you pay your bills – but my … – The Star-Ledger – NJ.com
