No Fires Overnight in City of West Hollywood; LASD Remains Vigilant
News from Patch:

There have not been any arson fires in the City of West Hollywood since 2:09 a.m. Friday, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reported Saturday.

“There has been a significant increase in deputies on patrol throughout West Hollywood over the past few days, as well as incredible support from community members and West Hollywood city officials,” said Captain Kelley Fraser, West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station, in a statement.

On Thursday night and early Friday, 17 fires were set in Hollywood and five others in next-door West Hollywood. Most started in cars. A home in the hills where Jim Morrison wrote the song “Love Street” about girlfriend Pam Courson went up in flames on Rothdell Trail.

In some cases, fires started in cars damaged living units above them, causing the residents to…………… continues on Patch

2012 Sugar Bowl: Michigan unfazed by Virginia Tech’s veteran offensive line
News from Washington Post:

Less than a year removed from giving up eight sacks to Stanford in the Orange Bowl, Virginia Tech’s oft-criticized offensive line had a banner season this year, tying with Georgia Tech for the fewest sacks allowed in the ACC while right tackle Blake DeChristopher was selected as the best blocker in the conference. But count Michigan’s defense among those unconvinced.

“I really don’t think any offensive line can stand up to our physicality,” Wolverines defensive end Craig Roh said. “If our D-line plays the way we know how to play, I don’t think anyone in the country can.”

One of the more intriguing story lines heading into Tuesday’s Sugar Bowl will be the battle in the trenches. Defensive coordinator Bud Foster said Friday he believes it’s the key to his unit’s success, but it could play an even bigger role in how effective Virginia Tech’s offense can be against Michigan’s revamped defense.

Sleep Challenge 2010: Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough Keep Me Up All Night… Lessons (Yawn) Learned
News from Huffington Post:

Today is the last official day of the HuffPost/Glamour Sleep Challenge 2010… and I ended things by not getting a wink of sleep last night.

No, this was not an act of defiance or the sleep equivalent of a last day of school blowout. It was a twist of fate — and scheduling.

Last night, HuffPost LA hosted a party in honor of Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough — and Mika’s wonderful new book, All Things At Once, which will resonate with every woman trying to pull off the high wire act of balancing work and family.

Sleep-wise, the trouble was not the party but the fact that Mika and Joe had asked me to co-host the show with them this morning which, since Morning Joe goes live at 6 a.m. Eastern time, meant I had to be at NBC’s Burbank studio before 2:30 a.m. for hair and makeup (and had to leave my house around 1:30).

Architect of Russia’s Political System Under Putin Is Reassigned

Architect of Russia’s Political System Under Putin Is Reassigned
News from New York Times:

MOSCOW — Prime Minister Vladimir V. Putin said on Tuesday that the protest movement mobilized this month by angry voters is directionless and lacks competent leaders, summing up the protesters’ mindset with a phrase coined by squabbling Marxists: “The movement is everything, the ultimate goal is nothing.”

This was Mr. Putin’s second public assessment of the protest movement, which began after Dec. 4 parliamentary elections tainted by ballot-stuffing and other violations. He seemed to have thought better of belittling the demonstrators, as he did earlier when he said their white ribbons resembled limp condoms. But he said they lacked a clear agenda and he rejected their demand for new elections.

How will light bulbs change? Here are some answers
News from USA Today:

The nation’s new light bulb rules start taking effect Sunday. What exactly do they require, and what’s their likely impact, since Congress barred funds to enforce the efficiency standards? Here are some answers:

Q: What’s included in the new standards?

A: The standards require light bulbs be at least 25% more efficient and carry labels on the front and back of packages to explain their brightness, annual operating costs and expected life span.

The labels apply to all light bulbs made or imported after Jan. 1, but the efficiency standards apply only to traditional 100-watt incandescents on that day. The efficiency rules will begin applying to the old-fashioned 75-watt bulb in January 2013 and 40- and 60-watt bulbs in January 2014. Retailers can sell leftover bulbs as long as they weren’t made or imported after their deadline.

Minimum wage going up in 8 states
News from MSN Money:

This post comes from Susan Adams at partner site Forbes.com.

While economists and policy makers on the left and the right continue to disagree about the impact of a higher minimum wage on jobs and the economy, eight states will be putting into effect minimum wage hikes as of Jan. 1, boosting the incomes of some 1.4 million low-wage workers in Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Montana, Ohio, Oregon, Vermont and Washington.

The minimum wage in those states will rise between 28 and 37 cents an hour, adding between $ 582 and $ 770 a year to a full-time worker’s compensation, according to the National Employment Law Project, a group that supports a higher m…………… continues on MSN Money

FBI Joins Effort to Find Missing Girl, as Indiana Police Say Little After Calling Off Their Search

FBI Joins Effort to Find Missing Girl, as Indiana Police Say Little After Calling Off Their Search
News from FOX News:

The disappearance of 9-year-old Indiana girl from a family friend’s home on Friday is raising questions, including why for the second straight day police have decided not to search for her.

More than 100 emergency workers conducted an extensive search Saturday for Aliahna Lemmon around the mobile home park on Fort Wayne’s north side where she was last seen. No active search was done Sunday for the girl, who has physical and emotional problems.

Allen County sheriff’s department Cpl. Jeremy Tinkel said a new search wasn’t planned for Monday unless new leads arise through tips from the public or interviews.

Police haven’t said why they called off the search after one day and aren’t searching again. They also haven’t said what they think happened to Aliahna.

Aliahna and her sisters were staying at a family friend’s nearby home because their mother had been sick with the flu and Aliahna’s stepfather work…………… continues on FOX News

Aliahna Lemmon Missing: No Progress In Search For 9-Year-Old Indiana Girl
News from Huffington Post:

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — The FBI has joined the search for a missing 9-year-old Indiana girl and agents are scouring a mobile home park that’s also a haven for registered sex offenders.

Agents on Monday descended on the mobile home park where Aliahna Lemmon lived in Fort Wayne.

A sheriff’s department spokesman says Fort Wayne authorities plan to meet Monday afternoon to plan their next move after two straight days without a search for the girl. Aliahna went missing from a family friend’s home on Friday.

About a half-dozen people in black windbreakers were at the mobile home park Monday. Several identified themselves as FBI agents.

Search dogs were seen at a nearby storage facility.

NEW YORK (AP) — If you’re one of the holdouts still paying bills with checks, tracking your accounts with pen and paper or clipping coupons from the newspaper, 2012 could be the year you take the digital plunge.

A host of budding personal finance services and applications are poised to go mainstream in the new year, and together, they will likely have a big impact on the way Americans bank, shop, and track their finances. StubHub Ranks Hottest NBA Match Ups as Shortened Season Tips Off Christmas Day
News from Yahoo Finance:

SAN FRANCISCO–(BUSINESS WIRE)– There’s no apathy in basketball as StubHub, the world’s largest ticket marketplace, has seen tremendous demand for NBA tickets since the lockout ended earlier this month. Happy accident becomes a simple chicken recipe
News from Sacramento Bee:

I often have trouble trying to reinvent chicken. It’s particularly difficult with limited time and a 5-year-old with a picky palate. So one day I reached into my cupboard, grabbed several liquid items, threw them together in a bowl to marinate some chicken thighs – and, to my delight, it made a heck of a dinner.

I’ve only tried it with chicken and find it tastes just as good with the breast as it does with dark meat. Seems the thighs hold the marinade a bit better, however. If you’re doing just breasts, it helps to pound them out just before marinating. If time is limited, you can skip it. We’re talking quick, simple, just five ingredients.

As for what to drink, the sauce works with both a pinot noir and a white wine. Be sure to keep the wine in your glass and out of the pan, however. I once tried splashing in some red wine with the sauce, thinking this would add a layer of flavor. It tasted awful, so don’t bother.

Cheers, and here’s to th…………… continues on Sacramento Bee
